Sustainable Construction Methods for Remote Cold Regions
On October 27, 2015 Bob Perkins and Larry Bennett met with engineers at the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Central Region in Anchorage to present, and obtain comments on, the findings from their study of sustainable construction methods for remote cold regions. The project, funded by CESTiCC and UAF, developed a set of guidelines for use by construction contractors operating in rural Alaska and similar locations. The guidelines focus on field construction and maintenance practices that can enhance contractors’ environmental awareness, capabilities and success.
In the morning, Perkins and Bennett presented the results of their study to the Central Region’s Quarterly Design Meeting, along with speakers on five other topics. They described the study, identified some 230 practical guidelines that resulted from the investigation, discussed the incentives essential to contractors’ willingness to use the guidelines, and outlined their plans to make those findings available to the construction community, including a new page on the CESTiCC website that is under development.
In the afternoon, they conducted a workshop with DOT&PF personnel that discussed the guidelines in further detail and gathered valuable feedback on the guidelines’ practicality for conditions in rural Alaska.
