Dr. Xiong Zhang’s Research Featured in AlaskaDispatch
Cold regions present unique engineering challenges for sustainable materials and design due to extreme climatic conditions, the unavailability of quality materials locally in some rural areas and a large portion of the land-based transportation network passing through permafrost. Dr. Xiong Zhang’s field study at the Beaver Slide of the Dalton Highway indicates a special wicking fabric has great promise as a cost-effective means of dehydrating road embankment and controlling frost heaving and thaw weakening in base courses, as featured in AlaskaDispatch: Experiment finds wicking fabric battles 'frost boils' on Dalton Highway.
Results of the study are published in the current issue of ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering.
