Abstract

Today’s motor vehicles and DOT equipment are made of a wide array of metals such as carbon steel, cast iron, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and copper and copper alloys. All of these metallic components are subject to the corrosive effects of common snow and ice control materials known as deicers. The introduction of alternative deicers (other than sodium chloride) into winter road maintenance operations has made the corrosive effects more complex. The talk will start from the background of the deicer corrosion to DOT equipment and vehicles, explain the role of chloride-based deicers in metallic corrosion, and then discuss the corrosion mitigation strategies available (with a focus on the preventive methods and recent research advances). It will conclude with the key findings and proposed research needs.

Speaker Bio(s)
