Abstract

Life-cycle cost analysis has been recognized as an effective tool to measure economic performance of civil engineering infrastructure. Generally speaking, it consists of three components: initial/construction cost, operation/maintenance cost, and life-cycle loss, where the last two cost components involve time-dependent performance predictions. Thus, long-term serviceability and integrity and associated prevailing uncertainties are appropriately considered in the life-cycle cost assessment, which in turn, provides useful decision making information. In this presentation, two application projects will be presented. (1) First, life-cycle cost analysis is applied to determine the optimum repair materials for patch repair of RC structures considering corrosion. Three repair materials are considered: normal strength concrete without pozzolan, high performance concrete with silica fume, and high performance concrete with fly ash. (2) Second, life-cycle cost analysis is used to examine the vulnerability of the winter maintenance salt supply to depletion and the associated risk costs in Ohio using Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT)-specific data pertaining to the amount of salt storage, number of trucks, and lane kilometers maintained by each county.
