Day 1: SRH-2D

Morning

  • Modeling techniques will be presented using the Surface Modeling System (SMS), a graphical pre- and post-processer for SRH-2D.
  • Provide participants the knowledge, skills, and practice needed to use SMS to develop, run, and review results of 2D hydraulic models.
    • Cover Background Data.
    • Scatter data, Areal Image, Boundary Flow Conditions, Material’s information.
    • Describe Model Parameters and Mesh Generation.
    • Illustrate Simulation Setup and Model Run.

Afternoon

  • Computer workshop (Lakina River or Quartz Creek case study).
    • Use SMS to setup and run 2D models.
    • Generate and review 2D model results.
    • Review and discuss specific model issues found by the participants.

Day 2: HEC-RAS 2D

Morning

  • Cover features and capabilities of RAS Mapper.
    • How to Create a TIN and Raster using ArcGIS RAS Mapper.
    • Getting data from GIS to HEC-RAS.
  • Demonstrate how to develop a 2D computational mesh and spatially varied manning’s roughness layer.
  • Defining external 2D flow area Boundary Conditions.
  • Illustrate the setup of unsteady flow analysis.

Afternoon

  • Computer workshop (we will use the same case study).
    • Use ArcMap and HEC-RAS to setup and run 2D models.
    • Generate and review 2D model results.
    • Review and discuss specific model issues found by the participants.
    • A quick comparison between HEC-RAS and SRH results will be done.
